Clean up your dirty water applications using the Bürkert Type 5282
In the Type 5282 servo-assisted solenoid valve, Bürkert has achieved something that few other valve companies have managed to date: a diaphragm valve that is capable of performing optimally in backwash applications involving dirty media. In this article, Greg Wainhouse, Field Segment Manager .water at Bürkert, outlines the functions and benefits of this innovative diaphragm solenoid valve.

Servo assisted solenoid valve that handles dirty media
The Bürkert Type 5282 servo-assisted 2/2 way diaphragm valve features a heavy-duty separating diaphragm for aggressive and contaminated media, as well as a service-friendly manual override. With a diameter of up to DN 65, the Type 5282’s opening and closing times can be individually adjusted for the ultimate in control. Compared to cheaper general purpose valves, this innovative Bürkert diaphragm valve is more than capable of handling dirty media applications.
“These are high-end solenoid valves that deliver reliability and robustness,” says Greg Wainhouse, Field Segment Manager .water at Bürkert. “One customer has been using these to backwash filtration screens for waste water. Initially, they asserted that they didn’t need them because the water they were using to clean their screens and pass through their valves should be clean because it’s tap water. They went to one of our competitors and purchased a load of their valves, which all very quickly failed.
“The reality is that, although it’s a backwash, there are still dirty particles getting in to the valves one way or another. Our Type 5282 diaphragm valves are robust industrial valves for heavy duty applications involving dirty media. Up to a certain point they’re able to handle not overly dirty grey water and work very well,” adds Greg.
The Type 5282 offers an extremely high quality, durable alternative to cheaper general purpose valves that aren’t designed to last like Bürkert components. “The market is flooded with solenoid valves and general purpose valves that are designed for clean water applications,” says Greg. “However, they’re cheap and that’s a large part of the problem.
“The Type 5282 diaphragm solenoid valve really serves a purpose. If you’re dealing with dirty media then you don’t want to rely on one of these general purpose valves,” he adds.
Bürkert diaphragm valve offers close control
The Type 5282 also offers more process feedback than most other valves on the market. “There’s an option for a switched unit to be fitted to it to provide feedback whenever the valve is open or closed,” Greg continues. “You can adjust the opening and closing times on the valve, which is a unique proposition. There are also service kits for it, which break down quite easily. So, it is a valve that is relatively easy to maintain.
“It depends on the application but say for example an end user is performing screen washing then the Type 5282 will let them know that the valve has opened, allowing the liquid to flow out and clean their process. It is also available with ATEX rating, which would make it ideal for some sludge processing equipment.”
The benefits of choosing the Type 5282 diaphragm solenoid valve are certainly obvious as far as Greg is concerned. “For the upfront investment you can save a lot of time, hassle and cost in terms of replacing cheap solenoid valves,” he says. It can handle dirty media associated with backwash applications and gives you more process feedback.
“The Type 5282 is an excellent all-round diaphragm valve that will pay back your investment with consistently reliable and repeatable performance,” he adds. For more information about the Bürkert Type 5282 diaphragm valve, or to discuss your application requirements in more detail, please contact our sales team today on +44 (0) 1285 648 720 or email sales.uk@burkert.com.
