My Favourite Product: Vince Webb

This week our Technical Internal Sales colleague Vince Webb, talks about Bürkert's Type 8188 Guided Wave Radar Level Measurement Transmitter and explains why it is his favourite product.

"My favourite Burkert product would be the Type 8188 Guided Wave Radar Level Measurement Transmitter.

This is a versatile solution where continuous level measurement is required but a conventional capacitance or ultrasonic level measurement transmitter might struggle due to the effects of product build-up, changes to the dielectric constant or vapour dust and steam affecting the accuracy.

The Type 8188 is based on microwave technology. A low energy microwave pulse is sent down the probe creating a surface echo. When the pulse is reflected by the process media, the microwave energy is reflected back up the probe. The measurement is directly proportional to the time-domain reflectometry. This is converted to a 4-20mA signal by the electronics.

The type 8188 is best suited for tall vessels and is available in rod, cable and co-ax versions for measuring ranges up to 75m. An ATEX Intrinsically Safe certified variant is also available for Category 1 and 2 environments. Connectivity is via 2-wire loop powered technology. The output can be displayed on a local programmable indicator. The calibrated data can then be transferred between devices to make commissioning much faster.

Programming is straightforward, using PactWare/DTM and HART communication. The DTM collection software is available to download free of charge from the Burkert website. Applications include fermentation, bioreactor and chemical storage tanks."
