Bürkert TwinPower valves making digital printing of aluminium foil for yogurt lids more efficient.

Yogurt is a popular breakfast choice. In the dairy section at the supermarket one could easily be overwhelmed by the incredible selection of different brands and flavours, all attractively packaged with colourful shiny lids. And that is where Bürkert comes into the picture: in the digital printing of aluminium foil for yogurt lids.

Near the printer heads, which apply tiny amounts of ink to the paper or aluminium material, the machine is equipped with Bürkert TwinPower valves. The valves that control the supply of ink to the printer head are normally closed valves, which prevent excess ink from entering the heads in the event of a power outage or shutdown of the ­machine.

Important properties of the valves are chemical resistance to the ink and the high flow rate and compact size, since there is not much space in the vicinity of the printer heads. Another advantage of the valves is that they do not overheat even after extended use; heat could change the properties of the ink, which would have a negative effect on the print quality.

For this process, a company in the South of Germany, which installs our valves in machines for printing aluminium labels, uses ink that dries by means of ultraviolet light. After the ink is applied to the base material, the latter is exposed to light from UV lamps in order to dry the ink. The entire process is so fast that the machine can print about 1.2 m of strip material per second. This is the equivalent of about 12 standard photos (10 x 15 cm) or approximately 20 aluminium lids per second. The high-resolution quality is practically photo-realistic.
