Biotechnology

The integrated application of biochemistry, microbiology and process engineering with the goal of acquiring technical applications of the potentials of microorganisms and cell and tissue cultures.
Biotechnology is a term for the teaching of all the methods with which life-forms - from single-celled organisms to highly advanced animals - are used for technical purposes. Some biotechnical procedures are very old. Yogurt and cheese were produced for the first time in Mesopotamia (now Iraq) as early as 3200 BC. Biotechnology products include both yogurt and interferon produced using gene technology.
